Roman Bridge, Santa Clara-a-Velha
A ponte de D. Maria, também conhecida localmente como Ponte Romana, data do século XVIII e unia as duas margens do Rio Mira, em Santa-Clara-a-Velha no Concelho de Odemira. Pensa-se que ficou conhecida por ponte romana, por se encontrar na rota de uma estrada romana que ligava Alcácer do Sal a Portimão. No entanto, não existem vestígios de uma ponte dessa época, pelo que se pensa que a travessia se faria por barca.
Por perto pode-se apreciar a pacatez de uma vila típica alentejana, bem como a beleza e a tranquilidade da Barragem de Santa Clara, outrora a maior albufeira portuguesa.
Santa Clara-a-Velha merece uma visita atenta e demorada. A aldeia, branca e florida, desenvolveu-se à sombra da igreja de Santa Clara de Assis, conservando o seu carácter rural. Existe um aprazível parque de merendas junto à fonte do Azinhal. Desfrutem!
The D. Maria Bridge, also known as the Roman Bridge by the locals, dates from the eighteenth century and used to connect the two banks of the Mira River, in Santa Clara-a-Velha, Odemira. It is probably known as the Roman Bridge for being on the route of an ancient Roman road connecting Alcácer do Sal to Portimão. However, there is no trace of such an ancient bridge, therefore it is argued that the crossing was probably done by boat.
Nearby you can enjoy the peaceful harmony of a typical Alentejo’s village, as well as the beautiful Santa Clara’s dam, once the largest artificial lake in Portugal.
Santa Clara-a-Velha, a bright and flowery village surrounding the church of St. Clara de Assis, almost stopped in the past, deserves a closer look. There is also a pleasant picnic area near the Azinhal Fountain. Enjoy!
