Flores, along with the island of Corvo, is situated on the American
Continental Plate of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and belongs to the
western group of islands in the Azores archipelago.
Geomorphologically, the island is composed of two units:
.
The Central Massif - it is the central plain, where is located many
maar structures with lake-filled craters adjacent lands;
.
The Coastal Periphery - it includes the coastal zones, cliffs and
ancient beaches, as well as the coastal shelf. The island developed
initially from a submarine volcano from the Pleistocene period that
constructed small calderas and numerous pyroclastic cones.
Following a long period of quiescence beginning about 200,000 years
ago, several young phreatomagmatic craters and associated lava
flows erupted during the Holocene period, including two about 3000
years ago. The Funda de Lajes tuff ring formed about 3150 years
ago, accompanied by a lava flow that traveled toward the southeast
reach the area of Lajes. The Caldeira Comprida tuff ring in
Caldeira Seca (west-central Flores) later, at about 2900 years ago,
producing a lava flow that traveled towards the region of Fajã
Grande.
.
Azevedo et al. (1986) divides the lavas and deposits into two major
volcanic complexes:
.
Basal Volcanic Complex - includes products and deposits of both
submarine and sub-aerial volcanism, formed by pyroclastic deposits
and inter-bedded flows of alkali basalts.
.
Upper Volcanic Complex - represents the main sub-aerial activity
composed of three main stratigraphic units, that include basaltic
to trachytic flows with inter-bedded pyroclastic deposits in the
first two layers, and a more recent unit of exclusively pyroclastic
deposits.
.
A crater lake is a lake that forms in a volcanic crater, caldera,
or maar. Incoming precipitation fills the depression to form a
deepening lake, until equilibrium is reached between the rate of
water coming in and the rate of water loss due to evaporation,
subsurface drainage, and possibly also surface outflow if the lake
fills the crater up to the lowest point on its rim.
.
Crater lakes covering active (fumarolic) volcanic vents are often
known as volcanic lakes, and the water within them is typically
acidic, saturated with volcanic gases and due to that cloudy with a
strong greenish colour.
Although many crater lakes are known throughout the world, the
Azores Archipelago, situated approximately 1500 km from the
Portuguese mainland can also boast some magnificent Crater
lakes.
Lagoa Negra (“Black Lagoon”) in Flores island
along with lagoa Comprida, Lagoa Seca and Lagoa Branca is located
in the northern sector of the central highlands of Flores Island
and are the type of explosion craters maar, associated to hydro
magmatic eruptions. All of these craters, with the exception of
lagoa Seca, have a pond inside hence the names of them
(“Black Lagoon”, “Dry Lagoon”,“White
lagoon”, etc)
Lagoa Negra is one of the many beautiful natural settings in the
Azores. It’s one of the seven lagoons formed in seven
volcanic craters from eruptions that created the island. The others
six crater lakes are Lagoa Branca, Lagoa Comprida, Lagoa Rasa,
Lagoa da Lomba, Lagoa Funda and Lagoa Seca. The seven caldera lakes
are, to many, the scenic highlights of the Flores Island.
It’s named Lagoa Negra (“Black Lagoon”) for its
dark waters due to the profundity that go on to 100 meters
deep. This lake is surrounded by sand and is nestled between
high mountains. Around the edges of the lake there are large clumps
of hydrangeas of various colours.
The Earthcache
This EarthCache takes you directly to Lagoa Negra
“Black
Lagoon” where you can park the car and enjoy!
You have to perform three tasks:
a) Tell us: How deep is the Lagoa Negra?
b) Follow the wooden stairs on the right and tell us the name
of
the other lagoon just next to Lagoa Negra.
c) Why are the water in some volcanic lakes cloudy with a strong
greenish colour?
.
It's OPTIONAL but please take a picture from yourself with your GPS
in front of the Lagoa
Negra and show it together with your log.

lagoas;
.
A Periferia Costeira - que inclui as zonas costeiras, falésias e
praias antigas, bem como a plataforma costeira.
.
.
Complexo Vulcânico superior - representa a actividade sub-aérea
Seca", "Lagoa Branca", etc)
.

A EarthCache
.
