The ice-locked Baltic, around 10500 years ago
långsamt utåt – nya skär dyker upp i ytterskärgården
ca 6000 öar i Södermanlands skärgård.
Ancylussjön, ca 9000 år sedan
The Ancylus lake, around 9000 years ago

hamnen i Nyköping)
The landscape of the Baltic archipelagos is unique to this
part of the world. This particular group of islands is in a
rift-valley with a maze of narrow valleys., faults with steep drops
and wide depressions. The cracks were formed in the days when
earthquakes were common in the region.
The bedrock was formed around 2000 million years ago. Loose
material which had weathered off the rock and volcanic material
settled at the bottom of a shallow sea and were compressed, heated
up and folded to form whatare known as the
”Svekokarelian” mountains. They have long since
weathered down and the present mountain is what remains of the base
of this mountain range. The Archaean rock is made up of a mixture
of gneiss and granite. Gneiss usually has a swirly pattern while
granite tends to be spotted.
Compared to the ancient bedrock, the landscape is young in
geological terms. The mighty inland ice that passed trough the area
had a major effect on the landscape, hollowing out the large cracks
and polishing the rock. The north-western side (the push side) of
the rock is smooth, as this is the direction from wich the ice
came. On the south-western side (the lee side), however, there are
usually loose rocks and stones. The ice, several kilometers thick,
smoothes away the protruding crags and striations were formed by
stones frozen into the ice. The soils are mostly moraine ( a
mixture of stones, gravel, sand and clay). When the inland ice was
at its thickest it exerted a pressure of 2700 tonnes per square
kilometre. The tremendous weight of the ice pressed down the
Earth’s crust and since the ice melted about 10000 years ago
the land has risen considerably. This process is still taking
place, at a rate of 2 – 3 mm per year. Because of this, the
archipelago zone appears to be slowly moving outwards – new
islands are appearing at the edge of the archipelago while the
innermost islands are gradually merging with the mainland. Today
there are about 6000 islands in the Södermanlands archipelago. The
slow uplift means that the wavesw gradually rince the rising
islands of their soil, leaving bare rock on the high, exposed
ground and fine sediment and clay in the hollows.
The inner archipelago : Many of the larger islands
are in the innermost part of the archipelago. The landscape mostly
consists of woodland, with pine on the high ground where the soil
is poor and spruce in the more fertile valleys. This valleys are
also where most of the arable land is. Often surrounded by a border
of oak. The open landscape is well suited to a number of
light-demanding species. There are also plenty of shallow,
sheltered coves and bays, sometimes with beach meadows. The coves
often have abundant underwater vegetation, wich provides good
conditions for young fish and migrating sea birds.
The middle archipelago : The characteristic
features of this zone are its large number of small islands and
islets, wich often make up small ”archipelagos” of
their own. Between these are large, open bays. The vegetation
mostly consists of barren pine forests with gnarled trees,
noticeably influenced by the wind. On the smaller islands, juniper
and a few deciduous bushes are more common.
The outer archipelago : Right on the border
between the middle and outer archipelago is a string of islands,
with vegetation dominated by birch, known as the birch zone. Beyond
the birch zone is the outer archipelago with its bare rock faces,
islets and outcrops, all strongly influenced by the sea. Many of
the islets house large colonies of birds, whose nitrogen-rich
droppings allow for an unusual, lush flora.

To log this earthcache you will have to do the
following things:
1. At the coords you will see a rare steep face on the lee side of
that island.
On that wall is a huge crack from one side to the other.
Which statement is true:
A: The angle is about 80° and the rock is bright grey.
B: The angle is about 45° and the rock is bright red.
C: The angle is about 25° and the rock is bright brown.
2. You have read something about "slow uplift". Above the water
surface you will see these traces very well. Of how much cm / m, we
are talking about?
3. What type of rock the stone is composed of?
Pictures of your little adventure would be
great ! Send the answers to the questions in an email to me. You
don't have to wait for an approval-mail before you log the cache, I
will get in touch if there should be any problems. HAVE A GOOD TIME
!!!
