Die nordfriesischen
Inseln Amrum, Sylt und Föhr liegen an der Westküste
Schleswig-Holsteins und sind Teil des größten zusammenhängenden
Wattenmeergebietes der Erde!
Das gesamte norddeutsche Wattenmeer steht seit 1991 unter
internationalem Schutz und gilt als Biosphärenreservat der
UNESCO.
hier in ständiger Bewegung.
Oland, Gröde, Habel, Hamburger Hallig, Nordstrandischmoor, Hooge,
Wickingerzeit.

The North Frisian
Islands Amrum, Sylt and Fohr are located on the west coast of
Schleswig-Holstein and are part of the largest contiguous Wadden
Sea area of the earth!
The entire northern German Wadden Sea is under international
protection since 1991 and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
In June 2009, the Wadden Sea has been added in the UNESCO list of
world heritage of mankind.
Geology:
The island Amrum belongs together with the islands of Sylt and Föhr
to the North Frisian Geest Islands, which arose from the
penultimate glacial deposits, which ended about 125 000 years ago.
Therefore you can find on Amrum the remains of glacial moraines
(Geest core) as well as dunes and marshes.
On the cliff "Ual Anj" the core of the Geest Amrum emerges. The
rubble and debris have been deposited by glaciers here. Clearly
visible here are many boulders and the cliff.
The marsh islands and islets have no Geest core, but only consist
of the later march. Land and sea here are in constant motion.
Especially the former island beach area is subject to continual
change. Since the seawall at Beltringharder Koog the area consists
of the now peninsula north beach, the island and the islets
Pellworm Langeneß, Oland, Gröde, Habel, Hamburger Hallig
Nordstrandischmoor, Hooge, Norderoog, and Süderoog Südfall.
It is surprising that even on the side away from the sea, here on
the cliff "Ual Anj," the biggest parts from the island are lost to
the sea. But just in storms from northern directions, the islands
back is particularly attacked by the sea.
Landscape:
The island Amrum covers a total area of approximately 30 km². It
consists of a core Geest from the saale-glaciation, which has gone
from approximately 125,000 years ago. The moraine covers an area of
approximately 11 km² and is situated on the line Steenodde
lighthouse, the east shore to the village Norddorf and returns to
the West Coast. Remains of Neolithic tombs in the flat boulder
North Sea northwest of Amrum suggest that the Geest core once was
greater and was eroded by the sea. Based on this moraine in the
north and south was new land formed by sand accumulations and in
the central part there is the area of the Kniepsand with
approximately 10 km². The sand was flying since 13./14. Century to
the formation of 9 km² out dunes, which are partly covered. The
area of the march nearby the village Norddorf and some extensive
foreshore is less than 0.5 km².
According to the geological development and the geographical
appearance can the island Amrum be classified in three major
forms:
- the old, gently undulating moraine core with its heath and
farmland
- the west side of him lying, wide dune belt
- far the prostrate, the whole west coast accompanying Kniepsand
(sea sand really does not belong to the island).
The high Geest:
Only on the cliff "Ual Anj" is still something to be seen from the
Geest core of the island Amrum (here even large boulders fall into
the Wadden Sea), the rest is completely overgrown. Nevertheless, in
the hilly landscape you can recognize some high points, that have
been used safely before the storm floods of people. Probably at the
highest point on the Geest was built the Amrumer mill (there is now
a museum). But also aids to navigation were built on high points of
the moraine, and not at least the grave meals from the Stone and
Bronze Ages and the Viking period.
