The Hard Rock Cafe Dubai
The Hard Rock Café opened it’s doors on December 13, 1997
and featured an opening night concert by the great Chuck Berry. It
featured a 115 foot tall Empire State look alike, two great
electric guitar mock-ups crossing each other at the entrance, and a
globe at the top of the building that read “save the
planet“. At the time, the restaurant was located in the
middle of nowhere on Sheikh Zayed Road and required a long trek
from the city’s heart in Deira and Bur Dubai. But, people
came steadily each night to experience the rock ‘n roll
style, celebrating birthday’s, happy hours, live music, and
family outings. Inside was pure Hard Rock style–the
collection of memorabilia included one of Gloria Estefan’s
sequined dresses and pins belonging to the members of Wham!, the
80's pop group that included George Michael(2). The restaurant was
licensed for alcohol through the adjacent Palm Hotel Dubai
(formerly known as the Dubai Park Hotel). On the menu were Hard
Rock Nachos, Tupelo Chicken Tenders, Hickory Smoked Chicken Wings,
and the “Legendary 10 oz burger
A major property boom began in Dubai in 2002 when a decree was
issued allowing for foreigners to buy and own freehold property in
certain areas. Dubai Marina was one of those areas and together
with Media and Internet Cities saw massive development and rapidly
rising land values. Eventually, Hard Rock as well as the Palm Hotel
saw themselves being surrounded by construction activity. Where
once they used to be in the “middle of no where”, they
were now squarely in the heart of “New Dubai”. As a
result, the land Hard Rock Café and the Palm Hotel sat on were sold
to the developer Tameer and the Palm Hotel shut down in June of
2008. Consequently, the Hard Rock lost it’s alcohol license,
yet managed to remain open–sans alcohol–partly due to
intense lobbying by a supportive public. In fact, Sacha Narinx and
Bianca Bergh started the “Save the Hard Rock Café –
Dubai” Facebook group which garnered support from hundreds of
people. The Palm Hotel was demolished, and the Hard Rock could not
maintain it’s customer base in the same premises without the
alcohol license and the circumstances outside, thus closing
it’s doors to the public in March 2009.
This Lovely cache is hidden next to the old Hard rock cafe. It
is a 200ml sealable tupperware with a logbook and a pencil inside.
Plus a few small trinkets to start it off. Be aware of any muggles
as there is a university close by.
NB: The cache is hidden outside of the Hard rock cafe
fence.
