The moat is amazing!
You can see the fortifications of the Knights of St. John as the enemies could see it! You can carefully explore it and see that is a kind of Labyrinth! This moat never had water in it! It was a very clever trap for any enemy because of its structure! Enemies were seeing the strange openings or the different ways the moat was going and thought that the walls were broken...so... they were felling in the trap!
Imagine that every opening you see on the walls... had a cannon or other weapons...
Some parts are restored and you can easily see them... In some areas you can even see the workers... do not worry... the moat is open to visit!
Also... in many areas in the walls... you can see the coat of arms of the great magisters who built or restore the walls after a siege!
About the Amboise gate:
The most impressive gate of Rhodes from a military viewpoint is no doubt that built by Grand Master Emery d'Amboise: it was completed in 1512: the access was protected by two massive round towers clearly designed to withstand the Ottoman cannon. If the enemy had managed to make his way through the gate still he would not have gained access to the town; this because d'Amboise modified the design of the walls so that there were three other gates between the external gate and the town. For this reason the Ottomans called the overall system of gates Egri Kapi (Twisted Gate). The gate also had a bridge to connect with the rest land... since the whole medieval city was seperated by the moat! Remeber... you will be under the bridge!! :)
There is a small tunnel gate nearby... that will take you out of the moat, inside the old town... close to the palace of the Grand Master! That's... of course if you do not want to continue all the way until the exit of the moat... in Mandraki!
Please do not forget to wear a hat and sun protection and to have water with you! It is quite hot in the moat!
