Grey Dam
Situated near Mountain Drive just outside
Grahamstown, Grey Dam is a popular swimming and picnic spot during
the summer months. Students being students, you never know just how
much bathing costume is on all the bathers...
Grey Dam was constructed between 1859 and 1861 to
alleviate the water supply problem in Grahamstown. It was named
after Sir George Grey who was governor of the Cape Colony at the
time. (This is the same Sir Grey who founded Grey College in
Bloemfontein and Grey High School in Port Elizabeth). It has a
capacity of roughly 70,000 kilolitres, and is part of the Kowie
river catchment system.
To get to the cache, turn onto Mountain Drive from
Grey Street, and continue along the dirt road until you reach the
dam (see the additional waypoints). Park near the dam and take a
stroll up Mountain Drive, which is now closed to traffic from the
dam onwards. The cache is somewhat out of sight from the dam
itself, but when there is lots of activity, please take care not to
attract attention. GPS reception is poor at the cache location due
to nearby cliff walls, and the cache is well hidden, so be prepared
to search for some time.
