About this Earthcache

Hwanseon cave is a kind of solutional cave known as a Karst. Karsts were formed by acidic rainwater when it dissolves limestone. It starts with what is known as. This is when rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide as it falls through the atmosphere making it acidic. The rainwater is absorbed into the ground where it reacts chemically to the limestone. Slowly, the acidic water dissolves the surrounding limestone making a empty pocket; this process is called chemical erosion. Eventually this pocket gets large enough that water is able to flow through it. This only increases the size of the pocket as rock and sand are washed away; This process is called physical erosion. Eventually the chemical and psychical erosion forms an underground stream. Finally over hundreds of thousands of years or even millions of years the cave is formed.
