Geocache Description:

I've placed 13 cache around Bassett Green to celebrate my 1000th find and as a little thank you to all who've placed them.

History

Bassett (Basset) was the area of the Stoneham Estate (part of the Flemming Estate) around Bassett Green village and Bassett Wood, on the south part of North Stoneham Common. Until 1852, the Bassett area was farmland, woodland, and heath. It included the Estate farms of Kiln Bargain (or Point Out), Roger's Bargain, Poor House Bargain, and Red Lodge.

Following the first of the Fleming's Estate Acts in 1852, a basic road pattern was laid out, and the area was developed with villa residences - such as Glen Eyre and Bassett Wood - each set in large ornamental, wooded estates. After the First World War, these estates were further subdivided into low density housing estates, and Bassett became a suburb of Southampton, taking on its present-day suburban character.

Bassett Green village, also known as Old Bassett, Bastards Lane End, Bassett Lane End, was a village or hamlet on the Stoneham Estate, at the southern end of North Stoneham Common. The village green was sold by the Estate in 1963.

Please bring your own pen and ensure you place the cache as you found it.
