Moed, toewijding en uiterste liefde 1
Luister naar het verhaal: Klik hier. 's Morgens 23 januari 1945 was het extreme koud. Britse Mariniers kregen orders om op te rukken naar Brachterstatie. Toen ze halverwege waren kwamen ze onder zwaar vuur te liggen. Ze zochten dekking in huizen en achter een paar bergjes ingekuilde aardappels. Veel problemen werden veroorzaakt door een machinegeweer bij de Linner molen.
Gewonde mannen lagen op de grond in sneeuw en ijs. Ineens zagen ze Eric Harden (Royal Army Medical Corps) rennend het hoofdkwartier uitkomen. Dat was gevestigd in het huis Stationsweg 74 (toen familie Vossen). Hij knielde naast een gewonde en ging daarna snel van de een naar de ander, zonder op zijn eigen veiligheid te letten. Hij was kalm en vol toewijding. Na een tijdje pakte hij marinier Wheeler op zijn schouder en ging terug.
Men zei hem in het hoofdkwartier dat hij niet meer naar buiten mocht gaan. Ze zouden eerst hulp krijgen van tanks en een rookgordijn. Maar Eric zei dat de gewonden zeker zouden sterven in de sneeuw en kou. Hij ging daarom weer naar buiten met een brancard en twee vrijwilligers. Marinier Wales werd op de brancard vastgemaakt en ook in veiligheid gebracht. Eric raakte tijdens de 2e poging gewond door een granaatscherf.
Na een korte rustpauze ging hij toch nóg eens naar buiten om luitenant Corey op te gaan halen. Hier volgt zijn verhaal: ik herinner me dat Eric Harden naast me knielde terwijl de kogels rondom ons in de sneeuw spatten. Hij gaf me een spuit morfine. Haville en Mason vergezelden hem. Ze tilden me op en legden me op de brancard. Toen begonnen ze terug te rennen naar het hoofdkwartier. Harden voorop. Ongeveer 40 meter van het hoofdkwartier verwijderd hoorde ik een klik. Ik werd hard tegen de grond gesmakt. Haville en Mason vielen naast me. Harden zakte in elkaar en kreeg de brancard bijna bovenop zich. Hij was dodelijk getroffen (GC2WQM1: Moed, toewijding en uiterste liefde 1).
Toen de duisternis inviel, brachten de voorposten bedroefd het lichaam van Doc mee naar het hoofdkwartier. Zo kwam er een einde aan een bewogen dag. Maar ook aan het leven van Eric Harden, een uitzonderlijk dappere soldaat. Postuum kreeg hij het Victoria Cross. Hij gaf een schitterend voorbeeld van moed, toewijding en uiterste liefde voor zijn kameraden.
Henry Eric Harden was toen 32 jaar oud, getrouwd en vader van zoon Bobby en dochter Julie. Hij is postuum onderscheiden met het Victoria Cross, de hoogste en meest prestigieuze onderscheiding voor dapperheid die kan worden toegekend aan de Britse en Commonwealth strijdkrachten.
Op de naar Harden genoemde brug in Linne bij de molen is een plaquette ter nagedachtenis aan Korporaal Eric Harden (GC2WQJW: Moed, toewijding en uiterste liefde 2). Eric Harden ligt begraven op de Britse militaire begraafplaats in Nederweert (Cache 3 GC2YX1K: Eric Harden´s laatste rustplaats).

Listen to the story: Click here. Henry Eric Harden VC (23 February 1912 23 January 1945) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Harden was a 32 year old, lance-corporal in the Royal Army Medical Corps attached No. 45 (Royal Marine) Commando during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
On 23 January 1945 during Operation Blackcock, at Brachterbeek, Holland, three marines of the leading section of the Royal Marine Commando Troop to which Lance-Corporal Harden was attached fell, wounded. The Commando section had come under heavy machine-gun fire in the open field that morning, and the men were seriously wounded. One of the casualties was Lieutenant Corey.
Under intense mortar and machine-gun fire Harden was wounded in his side as he carried one man back to the aid post, which had been set up in one of the houses along the Stationsweg in Brachterbeek.
Against the orders of another Medical officer he then returned with a stretcher party for the other two wounded. Bringing in the second casualty the rescue party came under enemy fire which killed the wounded Commando. While finally bringing back the third man Lieutenant Corey, who had demanded he be recovered last, Harden was shot through the head and killed instantly (GC2WQM1: Courage, dedication and utmost love 1). Henry Eric Harden was then 32 years old, married and father of a son Bobby and daughter Julie.
He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his fearless action. On the bridge near the mill there is a plaque to commemorate Lance Corporal Harden (GC2WQJW: Courage, dedication and utmost love 2).
Lance-Corporal Harden's final resting place is in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Nederweert, Limburg, Holland (Cache 3 GC2YX1K: Eric Harden´s final resting place).
The citation in the London Gazette of 9th March 1945
In North-West Europe on 23rd January, 1945 the leading section of a Royal Marine Commando Troop having come under intense machine-gun fire was ordered to make for some houses close by. Four of the section had been wounded and were left lying in the open. Under continuous fire Lance Corporal Harden at once went forward and with great coolness and bravery attended to the four casualties. He then carried one of them back to cover. He was ordered not to go forward again and an attempt was made to bring in the remaining casualties with the aid of tanks, but this proved unsuccessful owing to the heavy and accurate fire of anti-tank guns. A second attempt under a smoke-screen also proving unsuccessful, Lance Corporal Harden insisted in going forward with a volunteer stretcher party and succeeded in bringing back another badly wounded man. He went out a third time, and whilst returning with the stretcher party, he was killed. Throughout this long period Lance-Corporal Harden displayed superb devotion to duty and personal courage of the highest order. His action was directly responsible for saving the lives of the wounded brought in, while his complete contempt for all personal danger, and the magnificent example he set of cool courage and determination to continue with his work, whatever the odds, was an inspiration to his comrades and will never be forgotten by those who saw it.
On July 26th 2011 Team Flugel received this letter from Robert and Julia Wells-Harden. Julia is the daughter of Eric Harden.
