Geocaching has taken me lots of places that I did not know existed. I hope to share a few with you. This is my first cache and therefore should be very easy to find.
The site is of a small memorial to two fallen veterans. I think they were both Mayfield born. This Memorial site was dedicated July 9, 1967.
Private Aldice McDougal Getchell was born in Mayfield, NB in Jan 21st, 1895. He joined the Canadian Infantry -New Brunswick Regiment 26th BN. April 11, 1916. He was wounded twice during World War I before he died Sept 2, 1918. He is buried in the Dury Mill British Cemetary, Pas-de-Calais, France.
Lieutenant Norman James Nixon was born in St. Stephen, NB. He was married to Berla Mae Nixon. As a member of the Army, Cape Breton Highlanders, R.C.I.C. he may have taken part in the advance across Holland and Northern Germany dying April 30, 1945. After the fighting ended over 1300 Canadian soldiers, Nixon included, were brought together and buried in the Holten Canadian War Cemetary in the Netherlands.
