A ring of caches around the centre of the 1st Battle of Newbury site. Total distance is around 2.6 miles.
The First Battle of Newbury took place on 20 September 1643. This loop of caches is around the central part of where it took place. The battle was between the Parliamentary forces under the Earl of Essex and Royalist forces under King Charles I. Sadly, in the battle, the Viscount Falkland, the King's Secretary of State, had effectively committed suicide by riding deliberately to his death in apparent despair at the horror of the Civil War. There is much evidence around to signify that this battle took place. These include street names: Charles Street, Essex Street, Falkland Garth, and the pub called The Gun. There is also a Falkland memorial nearby.
