In 1870 a route was surveyed from the Boston and Albany Railroad at South Spencer to the center of the village. The issue was brought to a town meeting in 1872 where the idea was voted "to pass over the article." Various other surveys were now made covering this and many other routes. It wasn't brought up again until April 7, 1877, where the article was passed over once again. After several other meetings on the same subject, the town finally, on April 3, 1878, voted to spend approximately $25,000 on building the railroad. In 1878, a 2 1/4 mile railroad was built, connecting Spencer Center with the Boston-Albany Railroad at Spencer Depot NE with the station being at South Spencer. After it was decommissioned and removed, it was tuned into Depot Trail. It now connects Chestnut Street and S. Spencer Road.
Updated 5/20/17- This was once an old snowmobile trail and has clear evidence of abandonment. The path is very old and has only one way in and one way out. Recently the 2 side by side entrances were blocked with 2 stumps. Seems after an attempt to restore this trail, they soon learned that water will always reclaim what was once its own. Many bridges, some make shift and some from the restoration, litter the path where the water reclaims. You must find a way to navigate these bridges to cross safely and as dry as possible to GZ.
Congrats to Thompy8 for the FTF!!
