Stadsparken

Stadsparken ligger här strax bredvid slottet och anlades 1877-1880 genom en donation av grosshandlare Johan Jeansson. Parken har karaktären av en romantisk, engelsk park med rikt innehåll av träd och buskar som ger parken omväxlande öppna och slutna rum. Här ligger också Kalmar konstmuseum och restaurang Byttan.

På medeltiden låg här en del av staden innanför en ringmur och vid arkeologiska utgrävningar har man hittat stengods som kunnat dateras till omkring 1250 e.Kr. På 1930 talet gjordes en större utgrävning av området då den gamla restaurang/paviljongen Byttan revs för att ge plats till dagens restaurang. Då grävdes delar av den gamla sjömuren ut och flera husgrunder från tidig medeltid fram till 1600-talet.

The City Park

The city park is placed here right next to the castle and was built between 1877-1880 through a donation by wholesaler Johan Jeansson. The park has the characteristics from a romantic, English park that withholds a rich variety of bushes and trees that gives the park an alternating space of open and secluded areas. Here you will also find Kalmar art museum and the restaurant “Byttan”.

In the medieval times part of the city was placed here inside a ring wall, at archaeological excavations stoneware dated back to roughly 1250 B.C. has been found. In the 1930’s a larger excavation of the area was made when the old restaurant/pavilion “Byttan” was torn down to give place for the new restaurant. At that time parts of the old wall against the sea was excavated together with several house foundations from early medieval times up to the 1600’s.
