Au cours du quaternaire, le massif vosgien a connu des glaciations successives. C'est pendant la dernière phase, celle de la glaciation de Würm (80 000 à 10 000 ans avant J.-C. environ) qu'est né le lac de Gérardmer.

During the quarternary, the Vosges mountain has a successives glaciations. It’s at the final phase, at the Wûrm galciation(around 80000 à 10000 years before J.-C.) that the Gérardmer Lake is born.
