Geocache Description:

Cache placed near former farm, used to grow hunting pheasants for Augusts Voss (general secretary of Communist Party of Latvia) in times of Soviet Union in Latvia. Cache dedicated to Bridaga praying house (Bridaga Lutheran church). It contains ONLY logbook and pencils, do NOT put TRADING items here at all!

Previous wooden praying house from 1850 to 1937 was near by, but it was not possible to reconstruct it. So in 1936 congregation of Lielsalaca decided to build a new church closer to cemetery. In 1938 land for church building is donated by Augusts Veinbergs; building materials, money is donated by private persons as well as by organisations, even from Karlis Ulmanis (president of Latvia).
Building works were interrupted by WWII .In the period of Russian and German occupations they were not renewed until 2009. Until 1961 worships were held
once a month; in June 1962 there was the last bell of soul.

During the following years church experienced hard times - vandals and time did much miserable things: missing windows, threadbare interior and exterior miserable. Everything inside the church was damaged but the icon – Jesus the Savour by Oskars Vindedzis. The icon was restored by the lecturer of Academy of Arts, Latvia.
Lielsalacas` congregation started restoring works in 2009. Interior in woodcuts were made by teachers and students of Riga School of Arts and Crafts ( Rigas Amatniecibas vidusskola).
Presently Bridaga Church has gained new outlook and new functions. It fulfills it main duty – to serve as a temple and also gives pleasure to many visitors .

So on a nice, sunny day, May 12 , 2011 a group of students (group i31) came to explore this place and mark it. Mrs Dace Klevina showed us church from inside and gave us lots of info and energy to continue our hiking along the Svetupe near the seashore .

Mrs Klevina, representative of Lielsalacas` congregation, is ready to meet persons concerned and willingly show Bridaga`s Church. Please contact: e-mail valdemars.janis@gmail.com
