ALOHA from O'ahu
---Hanauma Bay---
Hanauma Bay is both a Nature Preserve and a State of Hawaii Marine Life Conservation District. Its name has changed over time from Hanauma Bay Beach Park to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Visitors are required by law to refrain from mistreating any marine animal. The same laws concern any contact with coral heads, which look like large rocks on the ocean floor. They are located mostly seaward of the shallow fringing reef off the beach. Coral and marine rocks have been known to cause small cuts to the skin resulting in a need for serious medical attention so avoid these areas.
In 1967 the State Division of Fish and Game designated it as a Marine Protected Area which meant the fish, the reef and even the sand was protected. A volunteer group set up a booth at the beach and began teaching visitors about conservation of the reef and fish that lived there.
With its increasing popularity, Hanauma Bay became severely burdened with overuse. The 1980’s saw as many as 10,000 visitors per day. In August 2002 the Marine Education Center was opened at the entrance to the bay, where visitors must watch a short film and receive instruction about conservation of the Bay's fragile resources.
Today the City and County of Honolulu administers the part of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve lying above the high tide line, and the State of Hawai'I Department of Land and Natural Resources manages the underwater portion.
Currently (March 2024) Hanauma Bay is open Wednesdays through Sundays, with entry allowed from 6:45 am to 1:30 pm by reservations only. Visitors must leave the nature preserve by 4 p.m. There are separate fees for entry and parking. For detailed information go to: https://www.honolulu.gov/parks-hbay/home.html
