A cache hidden along the Dutchess Rail Trail that's open from dawn til dusk. Dogs are allowed on leashes as well as bikes, rollerblades or skis when the season's right. There is a high muggle factor on this trail most days, so please do you best to be stealthy.
This letterbox hybrid is part of a series of caches celebrating the history of railroads in the Hudson Valley. This cache is for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.
Inside this cache is a handmade stamp and tokens that are specific to this letterbox hybrid. You don't have to have a stamp of your own to claim the find, just log it as you would any other regular cache. Feel free to use the stamp in the cache but please return it and the ink pad to the bag for others to use. Also, please take only one token as they take a while to make. I hope you enjoy the series.
Although the cache is located on the ground, it would still be able to be found in winter until there is substantial snow. As with the rest of this series, you're looking for a 30 cal. ammo can just off the trail.
The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad existed for almost a century. As was common at the time, many small railroad companies were joined together to form a large conglomerate. In 1872, the New York and New Haven Railroad Company merged with the Hartford and New Haven Railroad. The resulting rail company, along with several other small ones, became the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. In due time, the company laid claim to over 1800 miles of main lines connection New York, Connecticut and Massachusettes. It served New England well during times of war and peace with passenger and freight service. After struggling through The Great Depression, it fought to survive for decades against the new interstate highway system, only to faulter in 1969 when it was taken over by the Penn Central System.
