A montanha da Penha ou Serra de Santa Catarina, desde há séculos que exerce um estranho fascínio sobre as gentes da cidade de Guimarães e de toda a região envolvente, que vêem no grande e caótico aglomerado de penedos, dispersos pela montanha aos milhares, o refúgio misterioso de primitivos povos e a sobrevivência de antigas tradições que o povo transformou em lendas de mouras encantadas, ciosamente guardadas em grutas e desfiladeiros ou no interior de rochedos, a que a imaginação popular associou a existência de riquezas e de tesouros, mas também de pestes e de catástrofes. Uma dessas crenças remonta a 1702...
“O ermitão Guilherme Marino, Italiano vindo de França, depois de deambular por terras da Galiza, escolheu a Montanha da Penha para se fixar numa das várias grutas naturais ali existentes. Pertencente á ordem de Santo Antão, o ermitão escolheu esta montanha porque, de acordo com os seus desígnios espirituais, a considerou propicia á vida contemplativa. Para isso , solicitara uma porção de terra e um rego de água para seu sustento, que lhe foram cedidos pela Câmara em 1709. O ermitão terá escolhido uma “escavação” numa formação rochosa resultante dum amontoado de enormes penedos para viver em retiro espiritual. Nela, terá colocado uma pequena imagem da Virgem para devoção. Na montanha, a presença do ermitão, entretanto descoberto por caçadores, difundiu-se e a gruta transformou-se num pequeno templo. Visionário das potencialidades do lugar para a pratica de um culto caracterizado pela eremitagem, o fundador do substrato espiritual da Penha até auspiciou a continuação da sua obra depois da sua morte, legando-a aos religiosos Carmelitas Descalços em decisão testamentária de 1731. Desde então, o legado do Ermitão tem sido guardado e actualizado pelos seus seguidores, até aos nossos dias. A 8 de Setembro de 2011 falece Frei Joaquim de Santo Elias, o ultimo seguidor de Guilherme Marino. Fica o seu legado, perdido para sempre, na Montanha da Penha.”
Mais de trezentos anos depois da chegada do Ermitão Guilherme Marino, a montanha da Penha continua a esconder o seu legado. Serás tu um verdadeiro geocacher, de coração puro e mente limpa, para compreenderes as pistas deixadas pelo ermitão e seus seguidores, e encontrar o seu legado perdido neste lugar encantado, misterioso e talvez até amaldiçoado? Veremos!

A demanda que vos propomos é encontrar esse legado, que tanto poderá ser um grandioso tesouro com jóias e ouro, como apenas um livro com os saberes ancestrais do Ermitão. Não deverão no entanto empreender nesta busca sozinhos. A procura só deverá ser feita à noite, na escuridão, e nesse período existem muitos perigos nesta montanha. Leiam sempre bem as pistas e estejam atentos a tudo por onde passam pois poderá ser-vos útil. Deixem tudo como encontraram e onde encontraram, a longevidade desta cache vai depender disso, pois a montanha durante o dia acolhe milhares de turistas e o que à noite pode parecer bem escondido, de dia pode estar muito visível. Utilizem sempre os caminhos, equipem-se devidamente (precisam levar lanterna) e partam à descoberta. Boa sorte, que o espírito do Ermitão vos ajude e vos proteja.

The Penha Mountain or Santa Catarina Hill, which for centuries exerts a strange fascination over the people of Guimarães and the surrounding region, who see in the great and chaotic mass of rocks, scattered over the mountain by the thousands, the mysterious refuge of primitive peoples and the survival of ancient traditions that the people transformed in legends of enchanted moors, jealously guarded in grottoes, canyons or inside rocks, that which the popular imagination associates to the existence of wealth and treasures, but also to pests and disasters. "The Italian Guilherme Marino, an hermit coming from France, after wandering through the lands of Galiza, chose Penha Mountain to settle in one of the several natural grottoes existing there. Member of the Order of St. Antão, the hermit chose this mountain because, according to his spiritual purposes, was considered to be proper to his contemplative life. To do so, he requested a portion of land and a stream of water for sustenance, which were assigned by the Town Hall House in 1709. The hermit had chosen a dig in a rock formation, resulting from a jumble of huge boulders to live in spiritual retreat. In it, he puts a small image of the Virgin for devotion. On the mountain, the presence of the hermit, meanwhile discovered by hunters, starts spreading and the cave became a small temple. Visionary of the temple potential for practicing a cult characterized by the Eremitage, the spiritual founder of the substrate of Penha sponsored the continuation of his work after his death, bequeathed it to the religious order of ‘Carmelitas Descalços’ in testamentary decision of 1731. Since then, the legacy of the Hermit has been kept and updated by his followers, to this day. In September 8, 2011 died brother Joaquim de Santo Elias, the last follower of Guilherme Marino. Stays lost forever his legacy in the Penha Mountain. "
More than three hundred years after the arrival of the Hermit Guilherme Marino, the Penha Mountain continues to hide his legacy. Will you be a true geocacher with a pure heart and clean mind, to understand the clues left by the hermit and his followers? The demand we propose for you is to find that legacy, which can either be a great treasure with jewels and gold, or just a book with the ancestral knowledge of the Hermit. However you shouldn’t take this quest alone. The demand should only take place at night, in darkness, and in that period there are many dangers on this mountain, so watch out. Read well the clues and look everything in your way, cause it may be necessary. Leave everything as you found and where you found, the longevity of this cache will depend on this, because during the day the mountain welcomes thousands of tourists and what at night seems well hidden, on day light may be visible. Always use the paths, equip yourselves properly (flashlight required) and have a good hunt. Good luck, may the spirit of the Hermit helps you and protects you.
