Flyttblock (erratiska block) är stora stenblock
som blivit transporterade med hjälp av is, det kan vara inlandsisar
eller glaciärer. Man anser att de flesta flyttblocken i Sverige
idag har blivit transporterade under den senaste istiden.
Flyttblocken transporteras på och i inlandsisar och glaciärer och
förflyttas i isens rörelseriktning. Då isen smälter hamnar
flyttblocken på den underliggande markytan. Flyttblocken kan också
har transporterats i flytande isberg och därför hamna långt ifrån
det ursprungliga isområdet.
Flyttblocken speglar den regionala
berggrundsgeologin ifrån deras ursprungsområde. Flyttblock i
Sverige består därför framförallt av magmatiska och metamorfa
bergarter som granit och gnejs.
Flyttblock är mycket vanliga i alla delar av
Sverige. De förekommer också i de delar av norra Europa (Norge,
Finland, Ryssland, Polen, norra Tyskland, Nederländerna och
Schweiz) och Nordamerika som under någon av de senare istiderna har
varit täckta av is. Blocken kan vara av varierande storlek och kan
bli upp till tiotals meter i genomskärning och de kan hittas i
princip överallt.
I
folktron kallas flyttblock för jättekast. Man ansåg att jättar,
eftersom de var av djävulen, inte tålde ljudet av kyrkklockor och
därför kastade stora stenar mot kyrkorna för att få slut på
oljudet.

Erratic
(erratic blocks) are large boulders that have been transported by
ice, it could be ice sheets or glaciers. It is believed that most
of the boulders in Sweden today have been transported during the
last ice age. Boulders transported in ice sheets and
glaciers are moved in the direction of movement. When the ice
melts the boulders ends up at the underlying surface. Moving blocks
may also have been transported in floating icebergs and
therefore be ending up far from the primary site.
Boulders reflects the regional bedrock geology
from their area of origin. Boulder in Sweden therefore consists
mainly of magmatic and metamorphic rocks such as
granite and gneiss.
Boulders are very common in all parts of
Sweden. They also occur in parts of northern Europe (Norway,
Finland, Russia, Poland, northern Germany, the Netherlands and
Switzerland) and North America that during any of the recent ice
ages were once covered by ice. The blocks can be of various sizes
and can be up to tens of meters in diameter and can be found almost
anywhere.
In folk belief they where called the giant
boulder throw. It was thought that the giants, because they were
the devil, could not stand the sound of church bells and,
therefore, threw large stones at the churches to put an end to the
noise.
