Geocache at the Via Ferrata Gorbeillon above Valtournenche in the
Aosta Valley.
Duration: 2.30h including return to trailhead
Difficulty: D /4,5 / K5
Exposure: south / south-east
Trailhead: next to parking coords, follow the yellow number 6 to
the entry.
The cache is located somewhere in the middle of the via ferrata
;-). Use the spoiler pics to locate the exact position. This via
ferrata is in high alpine terrain. Make sure to get a reliable
weather forecast and have the proper equipment. In the summer bring
enough water because you will be exposed to the sun all
the time.
Here you will find a full set of photos from our
visit in April 2011. This will give you a good impression of
what to expect. At a minimum, you need a climbing harness and
a full via ferrata set. In addition a carabiner with a lanyard
might be helpful in order to belay yourself while resting. You can
also bring a 20m rope to belay your partner if he/she doesn´t feel
comfortable. There are very good anchors to belay your partner with
a Munter hitch.
To find the cache you have to leave the fixed rope. You have
to walk/climb about 15m on an arete / ledge to get to the cache
location. You can see it in the spoilers pics. If you don´t feel
comfortable going there without a belay, don´t go for this cache!
Alternatively bring your own rack of protection gear.
Make sure to climb the via ferrata in the correct direction. If you
see a stop sign you are going the wrong way. In addition you find a
sign post with a map at the trailhead (I included a picture in the
photos). There is also a easy training ferrata which you pass by on
your way down. Don´t turn left here but follow the trail to the
right. It brings you back to the trailhead.
Pls. take 1-2 minutes to hide the container properly. This way it
lasts longer. Pls. take 1-2 minutes to hide the container properly.
This way it lasts longer. I write this twice beacause otherwise
nobody reads it.

A note on cache maintenance: I am in the Cervinia / Valtournenche
area usually 2-3 times per year. In addition I asked a local guide
from Cervinia for help on the maintenance.
