Geocache Description:

I thought I would share my science geek-ness with you in this geocaching series. I am a Cytogenetic Technologist. Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomes. I diagnose genetic disorders. All 24 caches in this series will be found in a 15ml centrifuge tube. I spin chromosomes in these at work every day!

Humans normally have 46 chromosomes in each cell, divided into 23 pairs. Two copies of chromosome 14, one copy inherited from each parent, form one of the pairs. Chromosome 14 spans about 106 million base pairs and represents 3 percent to 3.5 percent of the total DNA in cells. Chromosome 14 likely contains between 800 and 1,300 genes. Rearrangements of genetic material between chromosome 14 and other chromosomes have been associated with several types of cancer. Another condition is ring chromosome 14 syndrome, which can cause epilepsy.
