CACHE #4
Kostol Reformovanej cirkvi / The Reformed Church

SK:
Druhé založenie novozámockého hradu spadá do obdobia rozmachu reformácie, ked sa hospodársky a politicky utlacení masovo hlásia do tábora prívržencov novej viery.

EN:
The second establishment of the fortress in Nové Zámky falls into the era of reformation, when many economically and politically depressed have supported the new religion. The foundation of the first Reformed church in Nové Zámky is believed to be in the second half of the 16th century.
Even in those times there were attempts to teach in other than Latin language, especially in Hungarian language. The church is mentioned by the Ottoman traveler Evliya Chelebi. In one of his book of travels we can read: “The greatest and also most beautiful is the Hungarian church /the new reformed church/, where there are no sculptures or idols, and its walls glitter like marble…” In 1605 the believers in Nové Zámky had their own bishop – Miklós Dobronoki.
After 1663, when the city came under Ottoman rule, the church was rebuild into the main mosque and the 3500 believers of the reformed church disappeared.

At the end of 1920s, František Udvaros gave three rooms of his house on the Andódska street 12 to at the Reformed church’s disposal. Two of those rooms were used as the church which was consecrated in May 1934.

The members of the church set forth a mission to build a Church of Thanksgiving on the Bernolák square. Zigmund Szegheo, a civil engineer and the city’s trustee was entrusted with the project’s realization. The church was built in the modern style; its tower was 30 meters [197 ft.] high.

The March 14th, 1945 bombardment of the city that did not spare 60% of all buildings in the city center did not spare the Reformed church either.

Its reconstruction was possible only 12 years later, in 1957, when it was rebuilt at the same place.

The tower was rebuilt in 1976.

The full reconstruction of the church was done in 1984.

All benches are made of hard wood and there are copper plates engraved with family names on them. Altogether there are 340 places in the church and about 100 places for the choir. The church is complete with a harmonium, an ambo and a so called Moses’ bench.

The House of the Choir that houses all choir members since 1989 is on the spacious courtyard of the church.

The Reformed church in Nové Zámky is one of the precious landmarks of the modern civil engineering in our city.
