barroco tardio.
No
trabalhadas numa escultura grotesca.
A cripta desta
Do lado
Senhora). Neste altar está a Imagem do orago desta Igreja: S.
Bartolomeu.
Outro valioso património artístico do interior

A jewel of the Renaissance
The Church of Castanheira do Ribatejo, was built by
D.Antonio de Ataíde (first Count of Castanheira do Ribatejo) in
1534, at the site had collapsed years before the early church, by
an earthquake.
The church is sixteenth century with strong dash of renaissance, as
evidenced by the main entrance of the triumphal arch entrance and
access to the main altar. The main entrance has two columns in the
form of fluted shafts and arch is perfect lap, it tops the
sculptures are forming the thin medallions Chanterenne like
Nicholas, who introduced the Renaissance style in Portugal. On top
of the porch, and between this and the barred window, find the coat
of Ataídes.
The lofty and magnificent bell tower is decorated by spire, the
baroque. In the front left side, the side of this bell tower and
through the body outside the Church, we witness another renaissance
door.
The interior of the Church receives sunlight through glass panes of
beveled hole forming warheads to the outside, allowing deduced that
the main walls in stone of this church have a thickness or width of
the construction of about 1.20 m.
On the wall facing the south there are four large windows, one of
them partially obscured by the back of the altar inside the right
side and the other totally closed at the bottom of the wall. On the
outer wall facing the north, there are two large windows of the
same type and center at the base below the side door, Renaissance,
already mentioned. On the left flank, near the bell tower,
discortinam two more smaller glass panes, and a position of height
of the basement, the door to the crypt of this church. There has to
observe four gargoyles from the roof, with approximate forms of
body frontal animals (sheep, dog and maybe a bird of prey) which
are worked in a stone carving grotesque.
The outer body of the Church is strengthened with four columns of
reinforcement (two on each side) thus giving consistency to the
building to withstand earthquakes.
Parish Memories of the investigation to the village of Chestnut, 4
September 1759, it is understood that in the 1755 earthquake, the
church was left with only the walls raised.
Everything suggests that the Church had, before this earthquake, a
dome that was destroyed, and that it was formed by ribs, kind of
stardom, as Don Antonio de Athayde, ordered to build in all the
temples where it was landlord, the Church patent, yet, the corbels
of discharge of the dome. The crypt of the Church, maintains and
preserves the same type of ceilings, arched cross-sixteenth of that
era. The two holy water fonts and the pulpit is a renaissance,
although the latter revealed in five caps a triangular polyhedron
octagonal, has traces of late Gothic.
There are also two interesting confessional, and opposite side
walls, a well thought out design, because they are embedded in the
walls and ornate frieze of brick with discreet diamonds crafted in
stone.
The baptismal font, placed at the entrance of the church on the
left side, is also a perfect work and well designed in Renaissance
style.
The altar is of extraordinary beauty, with an altar in thick
columns twist, which is lavishly gilt decorated with fruit and
birds. At the center of the altar is the magnificent shrine of
large dimensions, a jewel of art full of individualistic
creativity. At its rear position and slightly above is the majestic
image of the Immaculate Conception and the top of the pedestal, a
rare artistic design, is installed crucified Christ. Are of the
eighteenth century, two other works of great architectural value:
the two side altars, of considerable size: the right side, a stone
altar that presents a golden one framing a screen with pictures of
shrines and the archangels Michael S. , St. Gabriel and St.
Raphael, in which we can still see the altar at the center, Christ
crucified, and laterally Images of St. Sebastian and St. Peter. On
the left, another altar painted masonry, with an altar, also carved
an image that falls Its appeal and the Child and that many consider
to be understood in Santa Ana and Virgo (the Virgin Mother N ª
Senhora). On this altar is the image of the patron saint of this
church: S. Bartholomew. Posted and occupying the interior of the
altar, on your wall, there is a crucified Christ, which is an
unusual and delicate work in copper plate, trimmed and
painted.
There is yet another valuable picture, which occupies no fixed
place. It is the image of St. John the Baptist, which is part of
this Holy Chapel, located along the national road, this picture,
the most representative of the glorious feast of St. John, the
Chestnut, whose leaves float to the Chapel of the Church and back
to that again.
Another valuable artistic heritage of the interior of this church,
is your whole set of tiles. The walls of the main altar area, its
total area, are lined with carpet tile type, the seventeenth
century, which rise up to the roof trough, richly decorated with
paintings of mythical or biblical character. The walls of the
entire ship, are covered, but not the entire area, for two sets of
tiles; starting from the deck to five feet tall, are placed tiles
of the same century, in green and white, on a provision diagonal
lines that intersect at right angles forming square of two
dimensions. Since then and for another four meters, the walls are
covered with carpet tiles type forming geometric designs and
figures of chain links and prints of angels. In the wall near the
entrance, the tiles do not rise to the same height, then downed by
a lower height, because, well think of times in this area match the
area of ??attachment of the Choir of the Church, in which there was
an organ of considerable value.
The entire floor of this church is of stone and mosaic. The stone
seat is almost entirely composed of large slabs with inscriptions
matching headstones of graves of distinguished persons and families
who had been buried in the church that preceded it.
