Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099) was NASA's second space shuttle orbiter to be put into service. Named after HMS Challenger, a steam-assisted Pearl-class corvette, the space shuttle had a very short service - less than three years. On Challenger, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space and Guion Bluford became the first African-American in space. Sadly, on January 28, 1986, Challenger disintegrated during the launch of her tenth mission, killing all seven astronauts on board. And we salute those brave astronauts.
The Shuttles in the fleet were named Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor (and we'll include the Russian Buran in the list as well).
