La
Grande Fontaine de Chamaret
Le village de Chamaret est blotti au pied de la tour du château
féodal. Cette tour de 33 m de haut (GC2QY4C)
faisait partie d’un ensemble fortifié construit dans les
débuts du XIIe siècle.
À partir de cette époque, l’histoire de Chamaret est liée à
celle des seigneurs locaux et à l’affrontement entre les 2
seigneurs voisins : l’évêque de Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux et
les Adhémar de Grignan. Ce conflit durera jusqu’au début du
XVIe siècle.
Chamaret a conservé une partie des deux enceintes entourant les
habitations massées sur le flanc de la colline (voir la très belle
porte « de la Grande Fontaine » construite avant
1254).
En 1781, Chamaret était
pourvu d'un lavoir, dit "la Grande Fontaine", un peu à l'écart du
village.
A la fin du 19e siècle, Xavier Sylvestre, habitant de Chamaret,
fait un important legs à la commune, qui permit de restaurer la
Tour, de construire la mairie-école ainsi qu'un nouveau lavoir
public en 1905 construit face à la mairie, vivement réclamé par la
population, puisque l'ancien lavoir "de la Grande Fontaine", daté
de 1781, était un peu à l'écart du village.

The village of Chamaret is
nestled at the foot of the tower of the feudal castle. This tower
is 33 m high (GC2QY4C)
and was part of a series of fortifications built in the early
twelfth century.
From that time, the history of
Chamaret is linked to that of local lords and confrontation between
the two neighboring lords: the bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux
and Adhemar of Grignan. This conflict lasted until the early
sixteenth century.
Chamaret has retained a portion
of the two enclosures surrounding homes gathered on the hillside
(see the beautiful gate "of the Great Fountain" built before
1254).
In 1781, Chamaret was provided
with a wash-house, called "the Great Fountain", just outside the
village.
In the late 19th century, Xavier
Sylvestre, Chamaret citizen, offered an important legacy to the
town, which allowed to restore the Tower, to build the school-hall
and a new wash house built in 1905 opposite the town hall, strongly
demanded by the population, since the old wash house "of the Great
Fountain", dated 1781, was a bit away from the
village.
Do not forget to visit the
impressive Tower of Chamaret (GC2QY4C)!
Parking is available next to the
wash house, but it is strongly recommended to visit this charming
village by foot!
