Créé par le gouvernement de Vichy en 1942, le camp de Saliers est le seul camp d’internement de la zone libre réservé aux nomades. Ce camp est l’aboutissement des lois raciales instaurées par Hitler et appliquées par Pétain. Il a été voulu par les autorités comme un instrument de propagande pour répondre aux nombreuses critiques qui s’élèvent à l’étranger contre la politique d’internement de Vichy. C’est pourquoi les baraques ont été construites sur le modèle de cabanes de Gardians. Surpeuplé et complètement insalubre, les conditions de vie y étaient très difficiles, notamment pour les enfants qui représentaient 30 à 40 % des effectifs du camp. Au total, près de 700 nomades ont été internés à Saliers.
Created by the Vichy government in 1942, the camp of Saliers is the only internment camp of the free zone reserved for the nomads. This camp is the outcome of the racial laws established by Hitler and applied by Pétain. It was wanted by the authorities as a propaganda instrument to answer the numerous criticisms which rise abroad against the politics of internment of Vichy. That is why sheds were built on the model of herdsmen's huts. Overpopulated and completely unhealthy, the living conditions were very difficult for it, in particular for the children who represented 30 to 40 % of the staff of the camp. All in all, about 700 nomads were interned to Saliers. .
