Geocache Description:

Second cache from the future series Collegi Romani

 [IT]

In Rome there are 61 colleges founded by Catholic Church from many countries. In these colleges live the seminarists and priest from the whole world who make his studies in different Universities of Rome.
The Pontifical Irish College was founded in 1628 by the Irish Franciscan, Fr. Luke Wadding O.F.M. and the Italian Cardinal, Ludivico Ludovisi, a nephew of Pope Gregory XV. This was the last of the many Irish Colleges that were once scattered over Europe when it was not possible to educate priests in Ireland. The College was closed for twenty eight years during the French Invasion and the Napoleonic Wars. When Pope Leo XII re-opened the College in 1826 he remarked that the College had a two-fold purpose, the education of students in Rome and the mission to Ireland. With the revolution in modern means of travel, the second part of the mission of the College is fulfilled nowadays by providing accommodation for pilgrims to Rome, especially during the summer months when the seminarians and priests are away from Rome. Today the College is home to 60 students, with half coming from Ireland and the others representing many different nations.
