The Mediterranean ecosystem of southern California occurs in only five places in the world, and is characterized by hot summers, moist winters, extended droughts, and periodic fires.

The chaparral plant community of the Santa Monica Mountains is uniquely adapted to survive these conditions, and in prehistoric times, supported a large population of Native Americans. Today, chaparral plants are increasingly used in home landscaping to help conserve scarce water resources.

The Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center and Native Plant Garden were established to share with you both the natural and cultural heritage of the Santa Monica Mountains. Nearly every plant you see helped the Chumash and Tongva peoples survive in the Santa Monica Mountains. Discover a few of their uses on a walk through the garden, as you notice the colors, smells, and textures of these native plants.

Today, south from the where this cache is located, students, teachers and rangers are working together to restore part of this ecosystem through a program called SHRUBs (Students Helping Restore Unique Biomes). This elementary school program teaches students about the importance of habitats, native plant communities, and our impacts on the environment.

After leaving this cache, take the opportunity to explore the trails in our rare and unique ecosystem and be a part of the history of this special place!
