Geocache Description:


This puzzle series was inspired by ePeterso2’s series “Puzzle Solving 101”. Even though the traditional method of learning is the best, there is always something to be said about taking shortcuts. This series should be a sort of “Cliff Notes” for those that would like to get some of the pesky “?”s on their solved list. Follow along and make sure you keep the final coordinates for each one of these puzzles because they will help you to solve the final puzzle.

Photos tend to have many ways to hide data within them. The list below is a short list of what to do to find some of the data that can be hidden in a photo:

1. EXIF data (this is metadata stored under EXIF or
a comment code tab)
2. Change the filter levels
3. Check for background pictures
4. JPHS (this is a program that will password protect data)
5. Check the photo tag (this is done by holding the
cursor over the photo)
6. Check the name of the photo
7. The file URL (each photo must be hosted on a website, therefore the URL name can be changed) this can be found in the address bar when you are viewing the photo.
The main program that we use is Gimp. It is a freeware (which means it is free!!!). A link is posted below that will take you to their site if you wish to download it.

To find the EXIF data in GIMP, the puzzle solver must open the image and then go to the image tab. From there go down to image properties, and this will open a new window. In this new window click the comment tab. It is that simple!!! If any hidden EXIF data has been put into the image then it will show up in this comment box. For other programs such as Photoshop, Pixilemator, Irfanview, or iPhoto you may want to Google how this is done, because there is a good chance the process will be slightly different.
