Highway 610 Expansion

The area in which you're standing will look very different in the not-too-distant future. It is quiet and out-of-the-way now, but in a few years' time thousands of cars per day will speed past this spot. Though the project is not yet funded, preparations have already been made.

To the east, you can see the giant mounds of earth that will become embankments for Minnesota Highway 610's leap over County Highway 81 and Fernbrook Lane. The highway will barely touch the ground before it passes over the new Maple Grove Parkway to the west. Further to the west you can see where this sleepy country road passes over Interstate 94. That quiet bridge will grow to become an interchange. The trip from Maple Grove to Coon Rapids will no longer require the lengthy detour to 694 in the south, or travel on roads with stoplights every few blocks.

Development has already made it difficult to visualize the acres of farm fields that once sprawled here. Was this stretch of asphalt once a dusty gravel road, traveled only by hardy farmers? Did farm kids play in that copse of trees to the southeast?
