The “Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas” is located in a county outside of Funchal, which allows to deepen the concept of decentralization and democratization of culture, an area that should be open and ongoing construction. This building dedicated to art and culture is known worldwide, being located in Calheta, in the West Zone of Madeira, just over 20 minutes away from Funchal. Enjoy the beautiful scenery!

CENTRO DAS ARTES | CASA DAS MUDAS O Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas está localizado numa localidade fora do Funchal, o que permite aprofundar o conceito de descentralização e democratização do acesso à cultura, num espaço que se pretende aberto e em permanente construção. Este edifício dedicado à arte e à cultura é mundialmente conhecido, estando localizado no concelho da Calheta, na Zona Oeste da Madeira, a pouco mais de 20 minutos de distância da cidade do Funchal. Desfrutem das belas paisagens que se podem observar !!! LUGAR O edifício do Centro das Artes pontua a paisagem colocando-se na linha de festo de um monte que acaba abruptamente sobre o mar. Localizado na Calheta, concelho de grande extensão na frente marítima da costa oeste da ilha, marcado por montes de altura considerável, sendo seu centro no vale mais profundo. CONCEITO O motor da construção da ideia tem como ambição redesenhar a “massa montanhosa”, onde o edifício actua como uma topografia. Este afloramento aparece como um grande conjunto de peças esculpidas onde a geometria de carácter abstracto destaca a intervenção, desenhando um corpo especificamente para o lugar, sendo simultaneamente “natureza “e artifício. A relação da pequena casa existente – Casa das Mudas – com a envolvente próxima através de socalcos, expressão marcante no território da ilha, fazendo surgir uma paisagem humanizada, que o projecto tem o propósito refazer face ao seu desaparecimento com as construções criadas ao longo do tempo. CORPO O corpo desenvolve-se ao longo de um eixo longitudinal, orientado sensivelmente na direcção norte/sul, resultante das condições topográficas, indo ao limite onde é possível construir. O corpo escavado e esculpido, propõe uma experiência subterrânea. Os espaços exteriores subtraídos ao corpo conceptual original, marcados pela textura e cor dos paramentos e pavimentos, agora pontuados pelo enquadramento da paisagem e presença dramática do céu insular. FUNCIONALIDADE O acesso principal efectua-se através de uma rampa que conduz a um pátio-pivot quadrado a partir do qual todas as funções existentes no programa do centro se distribuem de forma autónoma a cota superior e com ligações possíveis a inferior. A distribuição fragmentada das funções visadas, permite uma gestão autónoma de cada módulo no complexo edificado, permitindo deste modo uma maior flexibilidade na sugestão dos percursos que se distribuem pelos espaços expositivos. CENTRE FOR THE ARTS | CASA DAS MUDAS SETTING The Centre for the Arts building punctuates the landscape, placing itself in the ridgelines of a hill that ends abruptly at the sea. Located in Calheta, an extensive waterfront municipality on the island’s west side, marked by hills of considerable height, with its centre in the deepest valley. CONCEPT The impetus for the construction idea is to redesign the “mountainous mass”, where the building functions as topography. This outcrop appears as a large array of sculpted pieces in which abstract geometry highlights the intervention, outlining a structure specific to the setting that is simultaneously “natural” and artificial. The relationship of the small existing house ‘Casa das Mudas’ with the nearby surroundings through terraces is a notable manifestation on the island, creating a humanized landscape that the project intends to remodel faced with the landscape’s disappearance due to construction over the years. Creating a large, complex platform offset by the foundation’s different levels, stemming from adaptation to the topography, will restore this elevation. STRUCTURE The structure is developed along a vertical axis, generally facing nor th/south as a result of topographic conditions, reaching the limits where construction is possible. The excavated and sculpted structure offers a subterranean experience. The exterior spaces subtracted from the original conceptual structure, marked by the texture and colour of the facings and flooring, now punctuated by the framed landscape and the dramatic presence of the insular sky. FUNCTIONALITY The main access is reached by a ramp leading to a square patio-pivot from which all existing functions of the centre’s programme are autonomously distributed to higher elevations with possible links to lower ones. The fragmented distribution of the intended functions allow for autonomous management of each module in the building complex, thus permitting greater flexibility in suggesting routes distributed by the exhibition spaces.
