Geocache Description:

The Historic Star Boating Club is located adjacent to a small rock garden at the edge of the Frank Kitts Lagoon. Keep an eye out for the nautical memorabilia and artworks scattered around the area.

The Boatshed

The Star Boating Club was formed in 1856 and is one of New Zealand's oldest active rowing clubs. It is the oldest sporting club in Wellington and the 3rd oldest sporting organisation in New Zealand.

The club was first located near the Cenotaph, by Parliament Buildings. Reclamation work on the waterfront in 1874 necessitated the club's first move, to Lambton Quay. As further waterfront reclamation work started, another move was required in 1883. This resulted in the present clubhouse being completed in 1887.

The Boatshed on Customhouse Quay (pre-1889)

William Chatfield, the Thorndon Village Architect, designed the current club building (commonly known as The Boatshed) in 1885. Since the club had already had previous moves due to reclamation, Chatfield showed considerable foresight and designed the building on iron rails. In 1889 it was towed away from impending reclamation by a steam engine to 51 Jervois Quay, where it remained for 100 years. In 1989, Lambton Harbour Management moved The Boatshed from alongside the Wellington Free Ambulance Building to its current position by Frank Kitts Lagoon. The Boatshed is now listed as a category A historic building.

The Cache

There have been two other caches in this area (Dragoon Haze GCMN94 and Dragoon Haze II GC1CAMK), but both had muggle troubles and were eventually archived.

This new cache is in a slightly different spot from the previous one. You will be highly visible to any number of muggles so please take appropriate care when retrieving and returning the cache to keep its existence a secret. As this cache has been muggled a number of times, be cognisant of this if you decide to leave any trackables.

There is no need to leave the path. The cache is a 0.5L well camo'ed Sistema, and when placed contained a number of items in addition to the log book and pencil.
