Jan Palach

In August 1968, the Soviet Union together with other troops of the Warsaw Pact invaded Czechoslovakia to crush the liberalising reforms. A group of Czech students made a suicide pact intending to sacrifice themselves in protest of this invasion. Jan Palach was the first to set himself on fire in Wenceslav Square in Prague on 16 January 1969.

Jan Palach died as a result of his burns on 19 January 1969 at the age of 21. It is said that he set himself on fire not only to protest against the Soviet Occupation, but mainly to protest against the "demoralization" of Czechoslovak" citizens caused by the occupation.

The funeral of Palach became a large demonstration for freedom and democracy. The Czechoslovak secret police (StB) set out to destroy any memory of palach´s deed (Palach´s remains were exhumed), the attendance of Palach´s funeral was an excuse for terrible repression, pursuit and interrogation (the StB studied the photographs from the funeral).

A month later after Palach´s death another student, Jan Zajic, burned himself to death in the same place, followed in April of the same year by Evzen Plocek in Jihlava.

After the Velvet Revolution (1989) Palach (along with Zajic) was commemorated in Prague by a bronze cross embedded at the spot where he fell outside the National Museum. The Jan Palach square in central Prague was named after Palach, he also has streets and squares named after him in Brno, Luxembourg, Angers, Parthenay, Krakow, Assen and Varna. Palach is also mentioned in many cultural pieces.

The Jan Palach Memorial in Woluwe - Saint Pierre was put in place in 2001. The sculptor - Mr. Frantisek Janda donated this statue to the Czech representation in Belgium with the view to find a dignified place for it. As already mentioned, Palach´s death is not only part of Czech history, but European history as well - which is the one of the reasons for placing this Memorial in Brussels.
