Colonia Iulia Æmona: Krscanski/Christian center Traditional Geocache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

sonček: Dear all,

This cache was always accessible without entering the enclosed area. It was always set up in a way that a cache seeker did not have to enter the enclosed area!

All of the logs stating that a cacher did not have an access to the cache area or that the place is closed are plainly WRONG and misleading! It looks to me that geocachers posting "not accessible" and "closed" logs did not read the cache description!

Cache box was always accessible from the outside. There was never a need to enter the enclosed area (or to pay for an access) to log this cache. This is clearly and prominently stated in the cache description!!!

"Closed" or "NOT accessible" logs are NOT correct! Please read carefully a cache description before posting a non-accessible log!!!

Still, due to higher number of DNF logs in the last period I am disabling the cache and I will check the location and the cache box presence in coming days.

Colonia Iulia Æmona: Pozna antika / Late antique period

(EN) From its creation until its collapse, Emona was closely tied to events in the Roman Empire. Its geographical position meant it played an important part in the Empires military defence system. From the second half of the 4th century right up to the Hungarian incursions in the 10th century, this area was a transit territory on the route to the Apennine peninsula. Research into Emona has confirmed its important role in the period of Late Antiquity, when it was the first major station in support of the newly established defensive line across the Alps, Claustra Alpium Iuliarum.

Colonia Iulia Æmona: Sedež škofije / Seat of a bishopric

Živahni stiki emonske zgodnjekršcanske skupnosti z milanskim cerkvenim krogom odsevajo v dveh ohranjenih pismih sv. Hieronima emonskim redovnicam in menihu Antoniju.

(EN) From the late 4th to the late 6th century, Emona was the seat of a bishopric. The intensive contacts pursued by the early Christian community of Emona with the ecclesiastical circle of Milan are reflected in the two preserved letters from St. Hieronymus to the nuns of Emona and the monk Anthony.

In this late Roman period, the image of Emona gradually changed: some entrance ways through the walls were filled in, while the cleaning and maintenance of the cloaca and city ditches were neglected. In the 5th and 6th centuries, effectively the only new constructions of any architectural quality were ecclesiastical buildings. In view of similar cases elsewhere in the Roman Empire, for instance in Gaul, historians say that this did not indicate the collapse of the city but a change in the urban identity of Emona, reflecting changes in the thinking of the Emonans, in the priorities and role of the city at the time when Christianity spread across Roman empire.

Secular architecture and infrastructure was clearly no longer important, with major effort and financial input being focused on architecture linked to the early Christian Church, whose power was then growing rapidly. In cities throughout the Empire, bishops at this time were no longer just Church dignitaries but were taking on administrative functions. The change in the image of Emona in Late Antiquity thus reflects the change in the internal world of the Emonans, the change in their identity, and the administrative changes following disintegration of the Empire.

Colonia Iulia Æmona: Zgodnjekršcanski center / Early Christian Place of Worship

(SI) Nasproti Cankarjevega doma, je park Zgodnjekršcansko središce. Tu so arheološka izkopavanja odkrila rimsko stanovanjsko zgradbo.

To dokazuje obstoj mocne skupnosti prvih kristjanov v Emoni v tistem casu.

Rekonstrukcija krstilnega bazencka - Reconstruction of a chritening pool

(EN) On Erjavceva Street, opposite to Cankarjev Dom one can find the park Early Christian Place of Worship. Here the archaeological excavations uncovered a Roman residential building. Like most buildings in Emona it was built in the beginning of the first century A.D. In its 500 years of existence it was often modified and rebuilt. The first bigger modification occurred in the beginning of the fourth century when the paving was renewed and a hypo - caustic heating system and three new pools were added. This suggests that the building may have been used as a private bath house. In the second half of the fourth century part of the building was converted into a Christian place of worship.

A great change came about in the fifth century when the original place of worship was rebuild on a grander scale including a rectangular baptistery with a christening pool which was built by the central courtyard. The baptistery is paved with many colored mosaic in which names of those inhabitants of Emona who donated money for its construction are inserted. A covered hallway led to the baptistery. It also boasts a colored mosaic containing the name of the builder, the archdeacon Antioch. This proves that a strong community of early Christians was present in Emona at the time.
