Geocache Description:

"Ohio Spirit Quest #62 - "Half Moon Plot"

The Ohio Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Buckeye Pioneers. This series is inspired by and a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by Six Dog Team. In just over three years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over 550 caches, with the hiding teams growing as well. The Ohio Spirit Quest has begun to grown to over 30 in Ohio, with five current caching teams, three each with A Man and His Dog, one with a Couple and Their Dog... and one with A Woman and her Dog.
Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 111 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

Come with us now for a virtual tour of this old burial ground via this page, then go out and find the cache!

Welcome To Battenburg Catholic Cemetery
Adams Twp, Defiance County, Ohio

In the front of this small cemetery once stood the Battenburg Catholic Church. It is now long gone, as is the School #5 located directly across Adams Ridge Road.

History seems scarce on this area of Defiance County. However, the striking feature of this burial ground is the half-circle line of stones. Many are unreadable, or have only one name. A few have names and dates but those are for a very limited amount of time spent on this earth.

The crescent of stones are those of children, who all passed from us much before their time. For anyone who has spent any amount of time in cemeteries, especially in this little piece of the world, you, as well, have seen far too many gravestones for children. Many didn't live until the age of fiv and a many never made it past their first day of existance.

Many life-threatening diseases and illnesses were running rampant from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and are sure to have been a major contibuter. Cholera, thyphoid fever, and consumption (Tuberculosis) were just three.

So, when visiting this cache, feel free to contemplate how different our lives here would be, if all these youngsters had survived to spend it with us.

The cache container is a camoed matchstick container.
If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
