Nos finais do século XIX
começaram a existir nas margens do rio Arade várias fábricas de
conservas que foram bastante importantes na região até aos anos 60
do século XX. Foi nesta época que começou o declínio deste tipo de
indústria a par do grande desenvolvimento do turismo no Algarve que
transformou completamente a paisagem e as actividades económicas
aqui desenvolvidas.
Desses tempos, entre outras coisas, ficaram o edifício e o espólio
do actual Museu de Portimão bem como uma chaminé e um conjunto de
máquinas que decoram o pátio central de um edifício na zona
ribeirinha de Portimão.
Essa chaminé e as máquinas faziam parte do processo de produção de
uma fábrica de conservas de peixe outrora existente naquele local,
chamada Fábrica Mercantil de Bivar e Cª Lda.
As máquinas tinham diversos fins como cravar as latas (fechar as
latas de conserva), azeitar (colocar azeite na lata), litografar
(imprimir letras nas latas), entre outras.

In the late 19th century,
on the banks of the river Arade, several canning factories were
established. They were of the utmost importance in the region until
the 60s of the 20th century. Then the decline of this type of
industry began, alongside the great development of tourism in the
Algarve which completely transformed the landscape and the economic
activities.
From those times, among other things, remain the building and the
estate of Portimão Museum as well as a chimney and a set of
machines that trim the central courtyard of a building on the
Portimão riverbank.
The machines had different purposes as crimping (close the cans),
azeitar (to put olive oil in the cans), lithograph (print
letters on the cans), among others.
The chimney and the machines were part of the production process of
a fish canning plant formerly existing in that place, Mercantile
Factory Bivar & Cª Lda.
