Cimbrerstenen



Cimbrerne var en germansk stamme, bosiddende i det nuværende Danmark, muligvis i Himmerland. Sammen med et andet germansk folkeslag, Teutonerne, drog de omkring 120 år før Kristi fødsel ud på en gigantisk folkevandring, hvor de hærgede og plyndrede ned gennem Europa. Den altdominerende magt i Europa var på det tidspunkt Romerriget. De første sammenstød mellem cimbrerne/teutonerne og romerne resulterede i flere knusende nederlag til romerne. I mere end et årti var Romerriget alvorligt truet, før det til sidst lykkedes at nedkæmpe de indtrængende.


Forfatteren Johannes V. Jensen skrev i 1922 romanen "Cimbrernes Tog", og i 1924 rejstes i Rebild Bakker monumentet "Cimbrerstenen" med relieffer, udført af billedhuggeren Anders Bundgaard. På stenen ses den karakteristiske Cimbrertyr og indskriften:


"Cimbrerne drog ud fra disse egne i år 120 før Kristus."


Den imponerende sten er en rhombeporfyr, en ledeblok fra Oslo-området, bragt til Himmerland af isen.

English version:


The Cimbrians was a Teutonic people, living in the present Denmark, maybee in Himmerland. About year 120 B.C. they set off on a gigantic migration to the central and southern parts of Europe, where they ravaged and plundered. At that time, the dominating power in Europe was the Roman Empire, The first clashes between the Romans and the invaders resulted in some crushing defeats for the Romans. For more than a decade the Romans were severely threatened, untill at last they managed to beat the Cimbrians.


In 1922 the famous danish author Johannes V. Jensen published the novel The Long Journey about the Cimbrian "expedition", and in 1924, in memory of the Cimbrians, a stone was set up. The Monument, made by the sculptor Anders Bundgaard with the characteristic Cimbrian bull and the inscription:


"The Cimbrians marched out from these regions in the year 120 B.C."


The impressive stone has been brought to Himmerland by the ice in the Ice Age.
