Geocache Description:

NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES

The puzzle is a pretty simple research project, and is appropriate to this Halloween season. The theme is "Sensationalist Journalism of 1874." All answers should be readily accessible via Google or Wikipedia. Find the answers to the following clues and add up the value of the words such that A=1, B=2, etc.
  • Let A = the last name of the reporter
  • Let B = the city in which the murder occurred
  • Let C = the last name of the owner of the tannery where the murder occurred
  • Let D = the country in which the reporter spent his later years

The cache can be found at N 44 59.XXX W 93 23.YYY. XXX = 689 - ((A + B) * 4). YYY = 766 - ((C + D) * 6). Bonus points if you know why I have a personal interest in this story, and if you are able to read the original article without losing your lunch.
