Chimborazo: Above Second Hut, Closest to the Stars Traditional Geocache

Located at 5110 m.a.s.l.¹ on Chimborazo, the highest mountain in the world if you measure from the center of Earth, this cache has special significance, as this is the highest traditional cache placed in Ecuador. Might it be the farthest from Earth's core? I would like to see the your comments in the logs.

(I have noticed that the ISS geocache is the highest/farthest, but reaching this point is still out of budget from most geocachers. So, for the majority of mere mortals, I would suggest visiting this beautiful part of the world!. You might be closer to the outer space than you think.)

Do you know that there is an small lagoon above the second hut (Whymper Hut)?. Just climb a few meters above the lagoon and you will find the cache. Of course, you are not likely to find lots of muggles here ;) LOL.

This is an easy find. Just come closer to the "ground zero" point and check an small pile of stones. The cache is a small airtight tupperware-like container with a log book. Please seal it well to prevent wet and keep me posted about its condition.

I have also placed a small Ecuadorean souvenir made in Baños. If you want to keep it, please trade fair and log it.

What to wear:

Bonnet, gloves, scarf, boots of any kind, warm jacket, and sunglasses are strongly recommended. Climbing gear or snowshoes are not mandatory, but please wear something to keep you warm. A walking stick may also help you a lot.

Food to bring:

Pieces of chocolate (or energy bars) and hot beverages are recommended. The least are also offered at the huts.

Transportation:

There is a paved road that starts in Riobamba and reaches the check-in point where you have to pay a fee in order to enter ($2 for locals, $10 for foreigners). From the check-in point you have to follow a dirt path until you reach the first hut (Carrel Hut).

If you come using your 4WD car reaching the first hut is very easy. Small cars could also reach this point without difficulty if it has not rained or snowed. You could also ask any local touristic agency in Riobamba to provide you with the transportation.

Additional recommendations and warnings:

• If you wan't to go to the Chimborazo mountain an overnight stay in Riobamba is recommended.
• If you live in low lands, high-altitude sickness could be your worst enemy. Please rest for a while entering the huts in order to acclimatize. Have a cup of coffee or other hot beverage.
• WARNING: climbing to the cache is discouraged if you start feeling sick while you are ascending towards second hut.

Localizado a la altura de 5110 m.s.n.m.¹ en el Chimborazo, la montaña más alta del mundo si se mide desde el centro de la Tierra, este caché tiene un significado especial al ser el más alto geocaché tradicional en Ecuador. Podría ser el más lejano al centro de la Tierra? Me gustaría ver sus comentarios en los logs.

(He notado que el ISS geocache es el más alto/más distante, pero alcanzar este punto todavía sale del presupuesto para la mayoría de geocachers. Sabía que existe una pequeña laguna sobre el segundo refugio (Whymper)?. Solamente ascienda unos cuantos metros sobre la laguna y encontrará el caché. Por supuesto que no se encontrará con muchos muggles aquí ;) jaja.

El caché es fácil de encontrar. Solo acérquese al punto de "ground zero" y revise una pequeña pila de piedras. El caché es un pequeño contenedor hermético que contiene un log book. Por favor séllelo bien para prevenir la humedad y manténganme informado sobre su estado.

También he colocado un pequeño souvenir ecuatoriano hecho en Baños. Si desea conservarlo, intercámbielo con otro objeto de mayor valor y registre el intercambio en el log.

Qué ropa usar:

Se recomienda usar gorra, guantes, bufanda, botas de cualquier tipo, chaqueta abrigada y gafas de sol. No se requiere equipo de escalar o zapatos de nieve, pero vista algo que pueda mantenerle caliente. Un bastón de caminata puede ayudarle mucho.

Comida para llevar:

Se recomienda llevar pedazos de chocolate (o barras energéticas) y bebidas calientes. La últimas también se ofrecen en los refugios.

Transporte:

Existe una carretera pavimentada que inicia en Riobamba y alcanza el punto de entrada al Parque Nacional. en este lugar hay que pagar una tarifa de entrada ($2 para nacionales, $10 para extranjeros). Desde el punto de entrada se tiene que seguir un camino lastrado hasta alcanzar el pimer refugio (Refugio Carrel).

Si se usa un vehículo todo terreno se puede alcanzar el primer refugio fácilmente. Los automóviles más pequeños también pueden alcanzar este lugar sin dificultad si no ha llovido o nevadod. También se puede recurrir a cualquier agencia turística local en la ciudad de Riobamba para proveerse de un medio de transporte.

Recomendaciones adicionales y advertencias:

• Si se desea llegar al Chimborazo se recomienda la estadía nocturna en la ciudad de Riobamba.
• Si vive en tierras bajas, el mal de altura (soroche) puede ser su peor enemigo. Asegúrese de descansar frecuentemente entrando en los refugios hasta que se aclimatice. Tome una taza de café o cualquier otra bebida caliente.
• ADVERTENCIA: no se recomienda ascender al caché si se empieza a sentir mal durante el ascenso al segundo refugio.
