This little piggie went to market AND had roast beef.
This cache is located to the West of Winking Market and is
dedicated to the memory of Dick Winking. Dick opened his little
store, in 1948.
Most of the following information is gleaned from an article in the
Quincy Herald-Whig on the passing of Mr. Winking.
The little brick building at the corner of Fourth and Maiden Lane
houses one of the few surviving neighborhood grocery stores in
Quincy.
During an interview in 1978, Dick Winking was able to name 10 other
little stores that had operated within blocks of his business. All
had closed during his first 30 years of operation. In the early
1990s, Dick worried that construction of the Oakley-Lindsay Center
would mean the end of his store. Property in the neighborhood was
bought to make room for the convention center. But the Civic Center
Authority saw the store as an asset and decided to preserve it --
rather than taking down a building that would only yield a few
parking spaces. Removal of many small houses around the market did
not lead to its demise. Instead, the market became more visible and
business picked up. Frank Winking, Dick's son, runs the store now.
He gets help from his mother, June, and her sister, Jean.
Neighborhood children come in, as well, picking out penny candy.
Many frequent customers stop in as much for a visit as they do for
groceries or snacks. The personal touch has helped the little store
stay in business when so many others have closed. That was the goal
when Dick Winking opened his business nearly 62 years ago. "He
devoted his entire life to the store," Frank Winking said of his
father during an interview noting the 60th anniversary of the
store's opening.
