Geocache Description:

Welcome to Rahway Riverfront Park!

This 10-acre park sits in the shadow of the Union County Resource Recovery Facility, aka. "The Incinerator."

Because this facility generates over 40 megawatts of electricity each day, it is an ideal spot for a quick Power Trail!

Take time to visit all four caches in this series at Rahway Riverfront Park (GC2EHNY, GC2EHP0, GC2EHP2 and GC2EHP3).

Please park at the designated parking coordinates. Do NOT park in the parking lot of the Union County Resource Recovery Facility. The cache is NOT located inside the Union County Resource Recovery Facility.

Take a look around ground zero before you dive in to get the cache. The cache is easily accessible. Please re-hide the cache better than you found it.

If you reside in Union County or a nearby area, it is likely that your garbage is processed by this facility. If you have ever wondered what happens to your garbage once it leaves your curb, here is a description.

The Union County Resource Recovery Facility is a waste to energy plant wholly-owned by the Union County Utilities Authority and leased and operated by Covanta Union, Inc. This facility accepts three nonhazardous waste types: municipal solid waste, dry industrial waste, and animal and food processing waste. All of the waste is incinerated onsite. The incoming solid waste is either dumped directly into the receiving pit from the garbage trucks or dumped onto the tipping floor and then pushed by equipment into the pit. The waste is lifted from the pit by one of two orange peel grapples and placed into one of three boiler feed hoppers. Moving grates take the waste from the hoppers into the combustion chambers of the boilers. The combustion gases from waste in the boilers make steam which is used in onsite turbines to generate electricity.

This facility processes up to 1,540 tons of solid waste each day into enough electrical energy to power some 30,000 homes and businesses. About 10% is used to power the facility itself, and the remaining 39 megawatts of electricity is sold to the power grid.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEOHUNTER ON AN FTF FOUR-PEAT!
