Welcome to the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (2011-2020 International Decade for Biodiversity) Geocache Series. This series highlights local biodiversity along the Trans Canada Trail and other local natural areas.
Caches in this series have been located on or immediately adjacent to formal trails, to minimize trampling/compaction/invasive species impacts. Please stay on the trails!
Kerncliff Park is a unique, beautiful park located in the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. This rehabilitated quarry site has been regenerating since the 1960s and is an important component of the Cootes to Escarpment Park System.
The wetland boardwalk, forested trails, and gorgeous escarpment views are highlights at this former quarry site. The wetland and forest provide habitat for regionally rare plant species such as obedient plant; for birds from Red-winged blackbird to Virginia rail and sora; for painted turtles and a number of frogs and toads, snakes including the milk snake (a species at risk), and mammals like white-tailed deer and red fox.
Annual Earth Day community cleanups include litter and recycling pickup, invasive species removal, and native species plantings, all of which help keep this local biodiversity refuge beautiful.
Protect biodiversity in 2010 and beyond.
Conserve. Walk. Recycle. Learn. Share.
