Silesaurus
opolensis
Paleontological excavations have been conducted
on an open-cast clay mine in Krasiejow (close to Opole) for several
years. Thousands of bones of large amphibians and reptiles have
been found in the outcropped sediments from the Upper
Triassic.
The biggest excitement was aroused among scientists by the
discovery of slender reptile skeletons described in 2003 by prof.
Jerzy Dzik as Silesaurus opolensis. The systematic position of
these herbivourous reptiles is not exact.
They are more primitive then dinosaurs that are already known,
therefore they are often placed among the so-called
dinosauromorphs. They are the same age as the oldest known
dinosaurs, and can give a good idea about what their ancestors
looked like.
Age: Late Triassic (Carnian) 228.7 -
216.5 million years ago
Occurrence: Krasiejow near Opole (Poland)
Diet: herbivorous
Habitat: muds and aqueous flood water
Size of a live animal: length 2.1 - 2.3 m

Wykopaliska paleontologiczne byly prowadzone na
obszarze kopalni odkrywkowej gliny w Krasiejowie (k. Opola) od
kilku lat. W odslonieciach osadów górnego triasu znaleziono tysiace
kosci wielkich plazów i gadów.
Najwieksze emocje wzbudzilo wsród naukowców odkrycie szkieletów
smuklych gadów opisanych w 2003 r. przez prof. Jerzego Dzika,
takich jak Silesaurus opolensis. Pozycja systematyczna tych
roslinozernych gadów nie jest dokladnie znana.
Sa one bardziej prymitywne to dinozaurów, które juz sa znane,
dlatego czesto sa one okreslane jako tzw. dinozauromorfy. Sa one w
tym samym wieku, co najstarsze znane dinozaury i moga pomóc w
poznaniu jak wygladali jak ich przodkowie.
