Eugène Gilbert (1889-1918) - Aviateur.
Né à Riom, Eugène Gilbert passe son enfance à Vichy, où sa famille vient s’installer auprès de son grand-père maternel. Il est élève à l’école Carnot (aujourd’hui Sévigné-Fernand Lafaye) où il obtient son certificat d’études primaires en 1901, puis à l’école professionnelle supérieure où il découvre la mécanique. Il part ensuite pour Brioude avec sa famille. De là, il accomplit, à l’âge de douze ans, son premier raid jusqu’à Vichy sur un tricycle à pétrole. A seize ans, il entre comme metteur au point dans un garage clermontois avant d’intégrer en 1910 l’École Blériot d’Etampes où il obtient rapidement son brevet de pilote. Il effectue ensuite son service militaire dans l’aviation et bat à plusieurs reprises les records mondiaux de vitesse, de distance et de hauteur. Il revient dans la cité thermale en 1913 à l’occasion des Fêtes Fédérales de Vichy. Ses nombreux exploits lui valent les appellations de « Roi des Ailes » (attribuée par Roland Garros) ou encore de « Pégase des Arvernes ». En 1914, mobilisé, il est affecté dans l’aviation à Dijon, aux côtés de R. Garros, notamment. Il réalise plusieurs exploits grâce auxquels il est nommé Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, avant d’être fait prisonnier en Suisse. Revenu en France après s’être évadé, il est affecté à l’essai et à la mise au point des nouveaux appareils. C’est lors de l’un de ces essais qu’il trouve la mort à Villacoublay, quelques jours après la disparition de Louis Darragon… La ville de Vichy lui dédie un monument inauguré dans le parc des Bourins, ainsi qu’une avenue dans le quartier de France.

Born in Riom, Eugène Gilbert spent his childhood in Vichy, where his family came to settle with his maternal grandfather. He was a student at the Carnot school (now Sévigné-Fernand Lafaye) where he obtained his primary school certificate in 1901, then at the higher vocational school where he discovered mechanics. He then leaves for Brioude with his family. From there, at the age of twelve, he made his first raid to Vichy on an oil tricycle. At the age of sixteen, he entered a garage in Clermont as a developer before joining the Blériot d'Etampes School in 1910, where he quickly obtained his pilot's license. He then completed his military service in the air force and repeatedly broke world records for speed, distance and height. He returned to the spa town in 1913 on the occasion of the Vichy Federal Holidays. His numerous exploits earned him the names of “King of the Wings” (attributed by Roland Garros) or “Pégase des Arvernes”. In 1914, mobilized, he was assigned to the aviation in Dijon, alongside R. Garros, in particular. He achieved several exploits thanks to which he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, before being taken prisoner in Switzerland. Returning to France after escaping, he was assigned to test and develop new devices. It was during one of these trials that he died in Villacoublay, a few days after the disappearance of Louis Darragon… The town of Vichy dedicated a monument to him, inaugurated in the Bourins park, as well as an avenue in the district of France.
