Partial coordinates for the McCarthy Challenge cache are written in each logbook.
The McCarthy Challenge cache isn't difficult to find once you have the coordinates for it. But getting the coordinates may test your experience as a cacher and puzzle solver, so we think the cache rates five stars.
If you tackle all eight caches in one marathon day, you'll walk at least six miles. Most of the miles will be on trails but some of the trails are sometimes ... damp ... and there are some significant elevation changes. If you simply navigate to this cache from parking, the terrain rating might be 3; we've given it four stars because you're unlikely to be at parking when you've finally acquired the coords.
Here's a trail map of the area.
Hazards: We've seen bear, deer, and porcupine but no poison ivy and no snakes. There are berry bushes which currently provide a nice snack but no cache is hidden in a briar patch. During hunting season you may see a hunter or hear some shots, particularly on a weekend.
We had a lot of fun figuring out how we wanted to hide this cache. Please replace the cache thoughtfully and carefully.
