(EN) The Panga cliff is the highest of the Saaremaa and Muhu cliffs, reaching to a maximum of 21.3 meters. The entire cliff is approximately 2.5 kilometers long.
Panga cliff is formed as a result of tropic sea sediments of Silurian period having settled about 416-443 million years ago.
Silurian Klint is an extensive cliff running through the Baltic Sea and arising from the sea in the western coast of Saaremaa and it is is the second remarkable coastal escarpment system in the Baltic Sea area.
All three development phases of the cliff can be distinguished at Panga cliff. Standing at the tip of the cliff, you can clearly see another half-circular cliff under water. This is especially noticeable during storms, when the waves break against the underwater rocks, while the inside of the half-circle is calm.
During bird migrations in the spring and fall, this half-circular lagoon is a favorite stopover point for storks on their long trip to and from Egypt, where most of them spend the winter. Sometimes there are well over a hundred storks, as well as other waterbirds, resting in the calm waters of the lagoon.
Folk tradition ties Panga cliff as a place of worship and sacrifice for the ancient Saarlanders. Each year a human being or an animal was sacrifised there to please the Sea God. It is known that until the 19th century, local fishermen poured libations of beer and whisky over the edge of the cliff, especially at midsummer eve, to ensure lots of fish during the coming year.
The last animal sacrifice took place during the 1960's. Mustjala kolhoz had finally acquired a prize seed bull. The animal was let loose among the cows that were pastured on the cliff meadows. In a delerium of utter happiness and apparently following some ancient instincts, the bull soon made a beeline for the edge of the cliff and over it went. No doubt the fishing was good that summer.
(EST) Panga pank on kõrgeim pankadest Saaremaa ja Muhu saarel, ulatudes kuni 21,3m kõrgusele. Kogu pank on umbes 2,5km pikk.
Panga pank on moodustunud troopilise mere setetest Siluri ajastul unmes 416-443 miljonit aastat tagasi.
Siluri klint on ulatuslik pank läbi Balti mere, mis tõuseb veest Saaremaa läänerannikul ning on teine märkimisväärne rannikutüübi süsteem Balti mere piirkonnas.
Kõik kolm panga moodustumise faasi on nähtavad Panga pangal. Seistes pangal on näha selgelt veel üks poolkaare kujuline astang vee all. Eriti märgatav on ta tormi ajal, mil lained murduvad vastu veealuseid kive, samal ajal on poolkaares vesi peaaegu vaikne.
Lindude rände seisukohalt kevadeti ja sügiseti on poolkaare kujuline laguun toonekurgede meelispeatuspaik nende pikal reisil Egiptusesse, kus enamus neist talvitub. Vahel on üle 100 linnu puhkamas laguuni vaikses vees.
Rahvapärimuse järgi oli Panga pank muistsete saarlaste ohverdamiskohaks. Igal aastal ohverdati siin Mere Jumala heameeleks inimene või loom. Teadaolevalt 19. sajandini kallasid kohalikud kalurid rikkaliku kalasaaki lootes üle panga serva merre õlut ja põletatud viina, seda eriti jaanipäeva õhtul.
Viimane loom ohverdati Panga pangal 1960. aastal. Mustjala kolhoos kasvatas lõpuks sugupulli, kes sai auhinnatud. Loom aga kurnas end ära arvukate lehmade paaritamistega, kes pangapealsel karjamaal olid. Meeltesegaduses õnnest ja mõnedest iidsetest instinktidest leidis pull otsetee üle pangaserva. Polnud kahtlustki, et sellele järgnes korralik kalasaak.

2) Name three development phases of the cliff.
3) This point is optional! Make a picture of yourself together with your GPS at Panga cliff and add this picture to the log OR take a photo of some item with geocaching logo on it ( badge, print-out, etc.) at the same location.
