Le vieux pont de Juvigny-sur-Seulles / The old bridge of Juvigny-sur-Seulles

Par arrêté du 19 septembre 2006, ce pont a été inscrit aux Monuments Historiques pour sa qualité architecturale, son originalité, son authenticité et son intérêt historique. En effet, ce pont en pierre, construit au Moyen Âge, à 5 arches formant une courbe est certainement l'un des plus vieux ouvrages d'art existant encore dans le Calvados. Construit sur la Seulles, et situé sur les communes de Juvigny-sur-Seulles et de Tilly-sur-Seulles, il fut, à l'origine, un point de passage privilégié et important pour les pèlerins se rendant au Mont Saint Michel.

Autour de lui, de nombreux commerces s'étaient établis (auberges, cabaret, boulangerie, maréchal-ferrant, etc.) Un Hôtel Dieu était également implanté à Juvigny pour y soigner les pèlerins malades. À la fin du XVIII^e siècle, il connut également un fort trafic dû au commerce de la chaux (les communes de Fontenay-Le-Pesnel, de Tilly-sur-Seulles et de Juvigny-sur-Seulles possédaient de nombreuses carrières de pierre calcaire et des fours à chaux très actifs). En 1850 fut édifié un pont plus large et plus conforme à la circulation moderne.

By order of September 19th, 2006, this bridge was registered on Historic Monuments for its architectural quality, its originality, its authenticity and its historic interest. Indeed, this stone bridge, built in the Middle Ages, in 5 arcs forming a curve is certainly one of the oldest works of engineering still existing in the Calvados. Built on Seulles, and situated on the municipalities of Juvigny-sur-Seulles and Tilly-sur-Seulles, it was, originally, a passage privileged and important for the pilgrims going to the Mont Saint-Michel.

Around him, numerous businesses had become established (inns, cabaret, bakery, blacksmith, etc.) A Hôtel-Dieu was also implanted to Juvigny to look after the sick pilgrims there. At the end of the XVIIIth century, it also knew a high traffic due to the business of the lime (the municipalities of Fontenay-Le-Pesnel, Tilly-sur-Seulles and Juvigny-sur-Seulles possessed numerous careers of limestone and the very active lime kilns). In 1850 was built a wider bridge and more in compliance with the modern traffic.
