Aptera was the largest Ancient Roman site in Western Crete. It was a very important city /state to both the Minoans & the Romans. Its name first appears in tablets from 14-13 BC.
The origin of the name is hotly disputed but most likely comes from Apteron the Minoan King who founded & ruled over the city.
