Geocache Description:

Meet fellow cachers and learn about Benchmarking FUNdamentals from experienced geocachers on Thursday, July 22, beginning at 6:45 p.m., at the Kenai Peninsula College, in Room 201 of the Walter E. Ward building.

Tonight's speaker is local cacher and benchmark hunter NorthWes, who has found and logged nearly 1000 benchmarks. Here's your chance to learn from an expert about those bronze disks stamped with cryptic markings that are found just about anywhere including the Park Strip, corners of buildings, bridge abutments, and mountaintops.  Oftentimes, these disks offer a glimpse into history (why were so many Southcentral benchmarks set in 1964?) and sometimes, they are even more mysterious than the toughest puzzle cache.  At a high level, NorthWes' presentation will cover:

  • What is a benchmark?

  • Why search for benchmarks?

  • Kinds of Benchmarks (Types of Stations)

  • Kinds of Benchmarks ("Adjusted" vs " Scaled”)

  • Reading NGS / GC Datasheets (including Box Score)

  • Finding Benchmarks

  • Logging Benchmarks

  • Other Questions about Benchmarks

The event will be hosted in Anchorage and transmitted to remote locations in Wasilla, Valdez, and Soldotna via WebEx.  Please place a watch on this event page to stay appraised of the final details.  If you would like to host this presentation elsewhere in Alaska, please contact Education Committee Chair, Paul Miller.

Please arrive on time, because the college is on summer hours and someone will be holding the door open for the participants. Up front administrative details will then be handled and announcements made, allowing the course content to start at 7:00 p.m. Adding a "Will Attend" log to this page will assure enough hard copy handouts are printed for the event participants.

Please bring your favorite nonalcoholic beverage to share with cachers, but don't bring food as that will incur extra room cleaning charges.

There will be a free-will offering cache container at the event to help defray the costs of hosting these FUNdamentals events.
